Review of the Nautilus NT-CC1 Smith Machine with Cable Crossover

Last Thursday, nearing the end of a $160 promotional discount at Costco, Mandy and I purchased a Nautilus NT-CC1Nautilus NT-CC1 Smith Machine with Cable Crossover.

For reasons beyond my understanding, the Nautilus website contains no trace of the NT-CC1 at all. Not only that, there does not appear to be any mention of it on the internet anywhere. Not even Google can find a reference to it. So welcome to the only review of the Nautilus NT-CC1 on the Web.

The NT-CC1 is a combination of a Smith machine and a cable crossover. It comes with a adjustable bench (capable of upright, inclined, flat and decline positions), several attachments for the cables (handgrips, tricep rope, low row pull bar, and ankle cuff) and 205 pounds of olympic-style weights (2x45lbs, 2×25, 4×10, 4×5, and 2×2.5), not to mention a built-in chin-up bar. It retails at Costco for $949.99CAN, but after taxes and the $160 discount it came out to just over $930.

Unlike other Smith machines that I have used, the bar is not counterweighted, which means the unweighted bar is quite heavy (~45lbs), which could be unweildly for novices.

Assembly of the unit went smoothly. The assembly instructions are understandable, but somewhat lacking in illustrations (only 5 figures for 42 steps of assembly). In total, it took me around 5 hours to assemble everything, but I took my time and made a stupid mistake that I had to go back and correct [1]. I’m sure a motivated person could assemble it less than 4 hours. I had no problems getting pieces to fit; everything aligned perfectly.

I managed to find one mistake in the assembly manual, but not one that would cause any problems for somebody of reasonable intelligence. The mistake is that there are no instructions on how or when to install the top pegs on the uprights. Here’s a tip: install them at the top of the uprights in the only open slots after following all the other instructions.

I have had one workout with bench so far and am so far very impressed. The motion of the bar is very smooth. The cables move well, too, but not as smooth as other gym equipment I have used. I hope this will change with the application of some silicone-based lubrication as the assembly manual recommends. It is very versitile. The owner’s manual describes 36 exercises, but between the cables and the bar there are countless more. In fact, about half of my first workout was exercises not mentioned in the owner’s manual.

In conclusion, I am very happy with the purchase and look forward to using it regularly from now on.

[1] If you really must know, I installed the chin-up bar backwards.

[Update: see the follow up review for some of my impressions and experiences actually using the NT-CC1]

Im trying to find the assembly manual for the Nautilus NT-CC1 Smith Machine. Please help
    Thanks in advanced

  2. Ken Dyck says:

Rod, I’ve posted a scanned copy of the assembly manual here. Enjoy.

  3. George says:

If you want (not sure how old this site is)I have the manual for the NT-CC3. I could email it to? The NT-CC models are only made for Costco by Nautilus. There are non to be found in Canada at this time, trying to get one.

  4. Lam Dinh says:

    Hey Ken,
I am very impressed with the NTCC1, the cable pulley use plates for weights with square posts as the sliding mechanism that is why it is not smooth. The smoother one use round posts with ball bearings like the “Smith” part of that machine, the bar bell. I am looking for a suppose new version , the CC2, which will correct that problem. Can anyone help?

  5. George says:

NT-CC3 is the newest one, none around currently. Will be at Costco later in the fall again 2007. I am waiting to get one as well. I have the manual from a friend who has one (pdf). I can email it to you if you want?

  6. william says:

volevo sapere se la panca viene fornita cosi come da foto, grazie.

  7. Ken Dyck says:

William, yes, the bench is included with the smith machine. It’s a solid piece of equipment, too, with rollers on one end that make it easy to move around.

  8. Dx11 says:

Just bought the NT-CC3 here in the UK at Costco. Great price (£552.00) and a very good machine. I could find no reference to it either until, (utilising product codes) someone mentioned that they are exclusive to costco members (hence the ..CC..). Very easy to put together, just a few nuts and bolts and a bit of time. Allow 9ftx9ft square plus around 7.5ft height to get the most from it. Altogether a good machine..!

  9. chavychase says:

looks a good machine looking at buying it does it use a smooth system on the bar for movement
ie ballbearings or a cheaper version?

    cheers
    CC

  10. ry says:

hi , iv been looking for one of these for ages but cant seem to get my hands on one, does anyone know where i can get one from in the uk.

  11. Matt says:

I just put together this machine after finally moving to a house where I have a tall enough basement! I am wondering if it is normal for the sliding weight plate holders to not rest on the rubber bumpers, but instead rest suspended few inches above them?

    Thanks

  12. Ken Dyck says:

Matt, I noticed the same thing when I first put mine together. I found that the cables stretch if you leave some weight on them, though. So I’d recommend leaving some plates on the holders while you’re not using it.

  13. Taz says:

Hi- I am looking at getting the NTCC3 but cannot find the weight of the machine and dimensions anywhere and these are important because it will be used in a nordic cabin. Can anyone help me with these? I would be very grateful for the info!

  14. kyle says:

I’m looking for a machine like this but I can’t find anything like this for under a thousand bucks. Anyone know where I can get one? Costco has one now but it doesn’t look the crossover cables are adjustable, that is a must….although it does have a lat pull down bar.

  15. Jonathan says:

When I purchased my NT-CC3 from Costco it took my brother and I about 3 hours to assemble it. Unfortunately the Weight Bar Support Sleeve (item 65) was not properly manufactured and the chrome plating was peeling off. It can be very sharp and my hands were cut when pulling it out of the packaging. We temporarily wrapped it with masking tape for safety reasons until a new one was ordered.

A couple of notes if you will be installing one.

    1) Screw 88 is the longer of the two primary screws they provide. Screw 79 is the shorter one. It is wise to place the two screws into separate piles before starting (can save you some potential confusion down the road).

    2) Part 53 was already assembled to part 86. We didn’t have to perform any disassembly to properly install it. You can just skip the step which tells you to deal with part 53. Looks like the manual for the CC3 didn’t properly get updated.

    3) As mentioned in a post I read, Do not over-tighten the Olympic Adapter (item 66) because it will crack.

    4) The bolts and nuts (A, B, D, and E) which secure the pulley system will be about 2 inches above the base (on ours). Make sure you have about 3/4 inches bolted through for safe operation. To achieve that depth, adjust nut B and E so that it is about 3/4 inches up the bolt before securing the bolt to the frame.

The parts telephone number provided in the packaging was for Canada. It took multiple calls and a little phone chasing to find a USA telephone number. Use this number to directly get to parts retail customer service: 1-800-782-4799. Also, 1-877-417-0519 was the main Nautilus number which was able to help me locate the correct number for retail parts.

For the part 65 which was damaged upon manufacturing was effortlessly replaced and arrived in 2 days. Support was very friendly and helpful. Have the parts diagram handy for fast parts ordering. They try to verify what you are needing before shipping.

Since I just installed it, I haven’t had too much time to gather the experience for a product review. But for the initial limited use, seems well made, sturdy, and reliable. Although the documentation recommends a space around 9 feet X 9 feet, you could potentially get away with 8 feet x 6 feet if you are really short on space. Just makes it a little tight fit when you are trying to place weights on system. I have it installed in a 12×12 room with exercise floor pads (purchased from Lowes) and fits comfortably with adequate room to move around in, store the bench, a t.v., and a tread mill.

Hi I had ntc-cc1 smith machine and I need (day1, day2, and day 3) mprogram so that I could start building up my muscle in good spirit not the bulky one just toning the muscles make me happy ang looks hunk.

Thank you and hoping you could help me.

  17. Ken Dyck says:

I’m not exactly the person you should be asking for advice on putting together a workout routine. I hardly know what I’m doing, myself. But if you haven’t already, I’d suggest looking through the owner’s manual and fitness guide (here) for exercises that you might want to try.

  18. jason says:

I have a smith attachment nt 1610 but have miss placed the manual? Do know where i could find another or possibly purchase one?

  19. claude says:

I have found a used system NT-CC1, says its 2 years old, would it be worth $500cdn?? What if any usage wear problems should I be looking for?
Thanks for any help in advance, Claude

  20. Ken Dyck says:

Claude, if it is in good condition, $500 sounds reasonable to me. I paid $930 for a new one back in January of 2005. Later that year, I heard reports that Costco was selling off the last of their stock for $299 in the U.S.

I’d check all the moving parts on the bench. The cables are likely the first parts to show wear. Try out the smith bar. Make sure it glides smoothly on the rails. Check that the rails are straight — that they haven’t bent from misuse. Give the frame a good shake (if it rattles, it may have been assembled poorly.) Try doing a few chin-ups on the bar.

  21. Jerome says:

Can someone please e-mail me a copy of the manual? The install manual if possible? For a NT-CC3 or whichever is fine. Thanks.

  22. Ken Dyck says:

    Jerome, see comment #2 above.

  23. Jason says:

Im thinking of purchasing a Nautilus Smith machine with cable cross-over NT-CC1. Can anybody tell me how tall it is?

  24. Matt says:

The reason you can not find any reference to it on the manufacturers website is because nautilus does not make it. It is made by an unknown company in china specifically for costco or sams club (fact) and a endorsement is purchased from nautilus. Almost all products sold at these stores do not exist through the supposed manufacturer. I learned this from a matress dealer when I asked him to price compare a Sealy matress that I saw at Sam’s club. He looked through his dealer books and even called sealy and the one at sam’s club didn’t exist. He told me that they are made by some off company and endorsed by sealy. The spring count is 2/3 of an actual sealy. And other quality is reduced. That is why you supposedly get it at such a savings. It is all a scam. I have investigated over 50 items sold at costco and sam’s and found this to be true. I have even found items of this nature at wal-mart. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but someones got to do it.

  25. Kuzmich says:

I have been using this NT-CC1 Smith machine for two months now and I am totally and completely satisfied with it. There is no scam or lack of quality in this product whatsoever.

Matt, what you’ve identified is Nautilus just creating a product on contract and sole-source it to only a warehouse club or a particular store to create a draw for new and existing members. These production-and-marketing agreements are so common (as you’ve found) but it sounds like you think it’s a vast conspiracy theory. It’s nothing more than a marketing strategy with specially branded packaging and special marketing outlets.

Please share facts before you slam a perfectly good product which I’m sure you don’t have.

  26. Lee Hurst says:

Just purchased and built my new Nautilus NT-CC3
How good is this piece of equipment for the money.
Thanks for all your comments it was those that made me buy.(Except for the conspriacy theory one)
    Cheers Lee

  27. Pete Dhadda says:

I purchased the NT-CC3 from Costco UK in June 2008 after reading the comments here. I have been very happy with the machine but as mentioned above the weight plate holders do not rest on the rubber bumpers. I left some weights on but no luck -then I thought maybe that’s the way it should be until one of the cables snapped 4 weeks ago. I have requested a further cable from Nautilus -still waiting as it has to be shipped from the US, however I adjusted the restraining bolts on the remaining cable and the weight plate holders now rest on the rubber bumpers. So my advice is to do this -DO NOT LEAVE THE WEIGHT PLATE HOLDERS SUSPENDED AWAY FROM THE RUBBER BUMPERS.It does not make this clear in the assembly instructions which is a shame.
Apart from this I am really happy with the machine for the price -which is the UK is approx $800.

  28. RC says:

Finally! I just purchased one off Ebay for $200.00!! I missed out when costco was clearing them out in ’04′, and have been searching ever since! Like the feedback.

  29. Rex Byers says:

If anyone is interested i have two new still in the bex NTCC1 you can see them one my website. pacfitnessequipment.com

  30. mdeamicis says:

hey all you guys mentioning that “the weight plate holders do not rest on the rubber bumper”. this requires you to adjust the cables. look at the machine on the back side at the bottom. notice the cables are anchored in with a long threaded rod with a couple nuts on the bottom. get 2 wrenches and loosen the nuts apart from each other and then screw that rod up to provide slack for the cable. tighten on nut and then lock it with the second. repeat for the other side. be careful to not back the rod out to far as there will not be enough threads to hold the cable tightly.

i love your site. i was looking for a routine as well. trying to get back into shape. we moved to a house and my gym is no longer a storage rack. 4 years that thing held up junk in my garage at the apartment. no more.

  31. Peggy says:

We just bought this weight machine used. Got it together fine but now am looking for a exercise chart on how to use every thing. Any one know where I might find that?

  33. Allen says:

    Hi,

Can these be found anywhere in the UK? I went to Costco and it seems to have been replaced with a Weider one – which looked very basic and overpriced.

    Thanks

  34. RC says:

Been back at it for a few weeks now, I can’t express how impressed I am with this machine! Smooth and stable.

  35. Joe Maggio says:

My neighbor is moving out of town and asked me if I wanted his NT-CC1 unit. I just got it moved into my garage. I love the motion and range of all the apparatius. Built as solid as the perverbial brick house! I didn’t even have to put it together, just had to tighten a few bolts!! Did a quick 20 minute workout with my son and feel great. I am going to take before and after pictures of my 46 year old body! Will check back in around September to let you know how it’s going.

  36. Jorge B says:

Does the CC1 has pulldown attachm. for conditioning upper back before wide grip pull ups?
or posibility how to add it?
can I use one side hi/lo pulleys?

  37. Adam says:

I have one of these machines – since around March 2005 – and absolutely love it. Unfortunately I have to move and must sell mine. I will list on eBay under Nautilus Smith Machine. Anyone interested, take a look on ebay. I will also keep watching this to see if anyone posts an interest.

  41. Vincent says:

Hi, I just purchased the NT-CC1 system used, and need to know what I can use on the smith bar system to make it move smooth again. It sounds rough when i move the bar up and down. What type of lub would I put on this?

  42. Ken Dyck says:

Vincent, I’ve had good results with a generic spray-on silicone lubricant. Available at most auto supply stores. The stuff I use is Motomaster Silicone Lube.

  43. Bob Hart says:

I am looking toward buying this after reading this. Thanks.

  44. Chris says:

Hi everyone, I just purchased a used NT-CC1. The issue I have is the smith bar. When rack/unrack the right side has more play (up and down motion). So if I push only the right side it would go up with ease; if i do the same on only the left side it would need abit more force. When I rack the bar the left side would rack sooner, since it’s lower than the right side by 1-2cm. The weight bar (56) was measured and even on both ends before I added the adapters.

Anyone experiencing the same issue? Or the former owner installed it wrong and somehow messed it up?

I owned a NT-SM1 before this and never experienced this amount of free play.
